Brief background

The Alberto Pasqualini Refinery went on stream in September 1968 with an average daily throughput of 4500 m³ of oil. This capacity was gradually expanded until it reached 20,000 m³/day in the 1990s. In 2001, it became a corporation, the Alberto Pasqualini - Refap S.A., which had our Downstream Participações S.A. subsidiary as its main shareholder.

The establishment of the corporation was organized with a project for the expansion and technological upgrading of the industrial plant, an investment worth $1.28 billion and completed in 2006. With the expansion, the refinery has increased its throughput from 20,000 to 30,000 m³/day and tripled its operational complexity, enabling the processing of heavier crude oil.

In 2010, the Alberto Pasqualini Refinery secured the license to process 32,000 m³/day. Late that year, by means of Downstream Participações, we acquired the totality of the shares of Refap S.A., consolidating it as a company wholly owned by Petrobras, affording gains in logistics and optimizing the domestic processing and production of oil products, over and beyond implementing investments planned for the production of low sulfur content diesel, in compliance with current legislation. In August 2012, the refinery was reinstated as one of our operating units.
